So in my opinion it's really fitting that Delilah wasn't waiting at the Lookout - she's been isolating herself for so long, that she can't even get herself to finally meet Henry face-to-face. Henry and Delilah basically conjured up a government conspiracy to overcome their isolation, just so they could have something in common.Īs far as I know, we never get confirmation that Henry and Delilah met up during their stay at the park. He dealt with it by becoming a hermit, completely shutting himself off from the outside world, and started messing with Henry & Delilah on purpose to at least have some form of interaction with other people.Ned Goodwin's isolation began after the death of his son. He coped with his isolation by turning his stay into a roleplaying game (building a "castle", planning adventures, and so on).Delilah drops the sarcastic act after a few weeks of knowing Henry, because she starts trusting him.īrian Goodwin felt isolated too - he hated climbing and would've rather stayed at home and geek about with tabletop games, science projects and whatnot. How does she cope with it? She does a bunch crosswords (typical "loner / introvert" trope), has a heavy drinking problem, and acts completely sarcastic to new people she meets. What does he do to cope with the isolation? He puts himself in even greater isolation by taking the Firewatch job.ĭelilah has been working at the Firewatch for over a decade, and the only time she cared for someone at her job - that person went missing.Henry felt isolated back at home because of the condition of his wife: Her parents can't stand him, he goes out drinking alone, his wife can't recognize him most of the time. In my opinion, the game is all about loneliness & isolation, and how different people deal with it. I might be one of the few people that were okay with the ending of Firewatch. They managed to create a beautiful world and an amazing little story but their greatest achievement in my mind is that they made you feel something very human and very real. Imagine how Henry felt knowing his holiday from the real world is over and now he has to go back and deal with his wife and what's happened to her. You're supposed to feel hurt and even a little angry because it's not easy dealing with real life. On both those points this game delivers in spades but I have to admit I also felt the ending was lacklustre and a little rushed.Ĭampo Santo wanted people to feel upset at the ending, the whole story is about escaping reality, the little references to the kid playing d&d and the maps and stories he made are a reflection of the story that Henry and Delilah fabricated. I had my eye on this game from the first trailer, loved the visual style and the voice acting looked fantastic. Copied and pasted from a comment a while back: It just leaves you empty and throws you back to your normal life where you, like Henry, have to deal with all your problems.įelt exactly the same. You will never see the face to this likable voice and you will never have this huge exciting adventure in this beautiful landscape. The story ends for Henry without ever seeing Delilah and without being the center of a big conspiracy and he has to go back to his shitty life and deal with his wife and all the other problems. Now I found the ending anticlimatic as well and I was really disappointed too, but that's exactly how you're supposed to feel and that's what makes it so great. So many were disappointed with it and I even saw people writing that this reason ruined the game for them. The conversations and the overall writing was exceptionell in my opinion and the game now left me with just wanting to talk more to Delilah and learning about her personality and life.įrom what I read many people found the ending to be very anticlimatic and did not live up to the buildup. I didn't expect the game to be that mature really, thought it was more a simple fun walking sim but nope. The visuals are stunning and sound design is great but what really made it for me where my character and Delilah. I finished Firewatch yesterday and want to talk about it.
